Grill Gets Monkey Off Back, Collects First 5 Flags Victory of 2012 in Allen Turner PLM Series

By Chuck Corder

Augie Grill crossed the finish line, checkered flag whipping madly in the wind, and pumped his fist.

This has to seem like a typo, but Grill’s victory in the Allen Turner Pro Late Model 100 on Friday at Five Flags Speedway was his first of the season in Pensacola.

“To win … after the early summer and spring we had, it’s nice,” said Grill, the all-time leader in Blizzard Series victories for Super Late Models. “It’s a tribute to the team we have here.”

Grill took the lead from Mike Garvey at the end of Lap 47 and the pair put […]

Bombers Driver Leonard Craig Jr. Finds Inspiration to Dedicate Season to Late Father

By Chuck Corder

Leonard Craig Jr. believed that fateful day in January would be like every other day with his beloved father.

There was no reason for one of the fan favorites at Five Flags Speedway in the Butler U-Pull-It Bombers division to expect anything out of the norm.

The 39 year old came to work at Craig’s Tire and Collision, the family business, like every other day.

He walked up to the front of the store that morning and saw Leonard Craig Sr. changing tires. Just like every other day.

Hours later a massive heart attack crippled the elder Craig, and drew the tight-knit […]

“It was awesome for me,” Massey said. “I’ve always loved racing. I just focused hard at it.”

How’s your self-esteem now, folks?

The 15 year old brings his steely-eyed determination Friday to Five Flags Speedway for the third Allen Turner Pro Late Model Series race of the season.

‘Mad Dog’ Maddox Bites Back, Makes Late Pass to Claim $1,500 with Mods Mania Victory

By Chuck Corder

It might take a while for the smile to leave Mike Maddox’s face.

After all the pain and struggles he has endured in recent years, the former crew member for Rick Crawford earned some well-deserved joy on Friday the 13th at Five Flags Speedway.

The “Mad Dog” scored his first win in Pensacola in a number of years by using lapped traffic to pass Chris Cotto with 11 laps remaining and pull away down the stretch of the 50-lap Modifieds Mania feature. Series points leader Donnie Hamrac finished third.

“I tell you, we (did) great tonight,” said Maddox, who earned a […]

Grice Rekindles Racing Flame, Looks for Breakthrough Modifieds Victory

By Chuck Corder

Scooter Grice was in a real bind.

He was desperate to get up to Five Flags Speedway to put in some practice laps in his Modified that was boasting a new engine.

But the dually truck Grice uses to transport his Modified was having fuel pump problems.

So he did what any sensible racer would do. The 36 year old fired up that new engine, put it on some four-lane pavement and sped down to America’s Favorite Home Track.

Don’t try that at home, kids. Luckily, Grice lives about a football field away from the famed half-mile asphalt oval.

Still, that doesn’t mean […]

Hamrac Puts Horrific Crash in Past, Looks to Go Back-to-Back in Modifieds 50 Lapper on Friday

By Chuck Corder

It was quite the triumphant scene April 13 at Five Flags Speedway.

Donnie Hamrac accepting hugs around his neck and other congratulations for a season-opening, 50-lap Modifieds win while sharing emotional embraces with family and friends.

Ten months after he suffered one of the most gruesome crashes in track history, the 39-year-old driver from nearby Semmes, Ala., was back at Pensacola’s high banks.

Better yet, Hamrac was standing outside his red No. 8 in Victory Lane with the winner’s trophy clutched in his hands.

Hamrac will try to recreate that memorable script when the Modifieds return for the second 50 lapper Friday […]
