Pollard Notches First Blizzard Series Victory of Year, Sweeps Night with Pro Trucks “W”

By Chuck Corder
Better late than never.
Defending Deep South Crane Rentals Blizzard Series champion Bubba Pollard found his way back to Victory Lane on Friday at Five Flags Speedway, dominating the third of four 100 lap Super Late Model races.
Pollard’s wire-to-wire win came deep into the night as Friday’s afternoon showers pushed back the racing schedule nearly an hour.
“We’ve been really experimenting during the first two Blizzard races,” Pollard said. “But, we told ourselves we’d throw away all of the Blizzard wins if it meant winning the (Snowball) Derby. That’s why we’ve been working so hard, trying to find something.”

New driver, no problem: Carswell, Kenseth Optimistic about Blizzard Series Chances

By Chuck Corder

It wasn’t that long ago that Jake and Deanna Carswell were like most racing fans.

But simply sitting in the grandstands, watching races across the southeast, wasn’t enough for the young couple from Woodstock, Ga., who promote Christian music concerts around the country.

“We race for fun; it’s a side business,” Jake Carswell said. “When we’re not busy working with music, we race. It’s a blessed life we live. We try to have fun with it.”

In 13 seasons, there has been plenty of fun. Carswell Motorsports has built an impressive resume of victories and drivers inside the Jody Ridley-inspired No. […]

Weimer Family Business: Georgian Father-Daughter Duo Battling for Pro Trucks Checkereds

By Chuck Corder

From the very beginning, Jami Weimer resisted her father’s pleas to get on the track.

Typical for any 5-year-old American girl, Weimer gravitated to the sport of gymnastics rather than the sport of racing.

Much to her dad’s chagrin, of course.

“When I first got into it, I wanted Jami to race,” 52-year-old Brian Weimer said

“She wanted nothing to do with it.”

That all changed two years ago when Jami Weimer, 20, got behind a Pro Trucks steering wheel.

Now, the Cumming, Ga., native is one of the series’ budding stars at Five Flags Speedway, which is where she’ll be at Friday night.

Thorn Puts Past in Rearview, Wins PLM Opener; Texan Luza Notches First Five Flags Victory

By Chuck Corder

Derek Thorn won’t ever escape his past at Five Flags Speedway.

Going airborne at the 2011 Snowball Derby isn’t a memory you easily forget.

But on Friday, the 29-year-old California late model driver was bound and determined to give Pensacola fans something positive to remember him by.

Thorn did just that, setting the fast time during qualifying and then capturing the 20-lap Pro Late Model opening featuring Friday night.

Thorn, who finished third at last year’s Snowball Derby, was driving the Kurt Jett-owned PLM out of the Jacksonville area.

Brett Holmes settled for runner-up honors while Texan Ryan Luza, the PLM series points […]

Allen Turner PLMs: Wild Derby Ride Belies Talent in California’s Derek Thorn

By Chuck Corder
Derek Thorn boasts a unique perspective of Five Flags Speedway.
Like most drivers, Thorn has seen the track up close and personal — three times to be precise. He’s felt its abrasive surface. He’s walked up and down its steep embankments. And he’s surveyed the high and low grooves while strapped into a late model seat.
But, Thorn knows a vantage point, uncommon among his fellow drivers.
The 29-year-old California driver viewed the famed half-mile asphalt oval upside down, sideways and spiraling like a football after his Super Late Model went airborne and barrel-rolled during the 2011 Snowball Derby.

Merritt Maintains Philosophy of Fun While Chasing Elusive First Career Bombers Win

By Chuck Corder
John Kevin Merritt has one mission he wants accomplished during race nights at Five Flags Speedway.
Despite his wiry and unkempt beard, the goal is certainly not to be mistaken as the missing link to the Robertson clan, the follicle-friendly family famous for reality-television’s “Duck Dynasty.”
And, believe it or not, Merritt’s focus isn’t always coming home with a checkered flag. In fact, firmly entrenched in his fourth full season of a quasi-comeback tour, Merritt is still seeking an elusive win.
Instead of stressing about victories, the 51-year-old Butler U-Pull-It Bombers driver affixes his eyes on enjoying the moments […]
