Pollard Hoists Deep South Cranes 150 Title; Roderick, Johnson, Buttrick, Leytham Secure Titles on Night of Champions

By Chuck Corder

They don’t call it the famed half-mile asphalt oval for nothing.

Every time you look around Five Flags Speedway, it seems history is being made. It doesn’t matter the night, doesn’t matter those behind the steering wheel, one of short-track racing’s iconic venues never ceases to disappoint.

And what better setting to carve more history than at Saturday’s Night of Champions.

Bubba Pollard, fresh off a two-month hiatus away from asphalt racing, made a triumphant and historic return Saturday by winning the Deep South Cranes 150, the Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series and Southern Super Series season finale.

It was the 29-year-old’s […]

Leytham, Balkum Square Off for Bombers Track Title; Three More Champions to be Crowned Saturday

By Chuck Corder

The last months have clearly shown there is little love lost between Pensacola’s Robert Balkum and Mobile’s B.J Leytham.

The top two drivers in the Butler U-Pull-It Bombers division have gone at it on the track at Five Flags Speedway, beating and banging around the famed half-mile oval and even sometimes treating it as their own Demolition Derby playground.

They’ve continued their rivalry off the track, too. Both in the pits and online through social media, the duo has engaged in a steady stream of trash-talking that would make Floyd Mayweather blush.

Needless to say, the pair won’t be sharing a […]

Roderick, Smith Battle to Finish to Settle Blizzard Series Crown at Night of Champions on Saturday

By Chuck Corder

The life of a racecar driver is inherently demanding.

Even if, sometimes, the drivers don’t always know many details of their busy schedules.

Zane Smith is no exception.

The 17 year old is keenly aware he’ll spend much of this week flying back and forth between Sparta, Ky., and Pensacola.

As far as an estimated time of arrival in Pensacola? Meh.

“To be honest, I’m not sure if I fly out (Tuesday night) or (Wednesday),” Smith said. “I didn’t pack my bag this morning. I don’t know if it’s because I missed my alarm clock or what. I do know we’ll test (in […]

Choquette Beats and Bangs way to No. 5, Holmes Captures Season PLM Title; Jorgensen Finishes Strong for Pro Trucks Crown

By Chuck Corder

Earning a victory at Five Flags Speedway, regardless the division, can be a career-defining milestone for any driver.

Rarely does a hotshoe come along and tame the magnitude of the famed half-mile asphalt oval.

And few late model drivers have ever had Five Flags under their spell quite like Jeff Choquette has this summer.

The 29 year old from West Palm Beach ran his streak of Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model wins to five by capturing the Allen Turner Tuneup 100 on Sunday at Pensacola’s high banks. The race was postponed from Saturday night because of periodic showers.

“The cards have […]

Barnhill Celebrates Sportsmen Victory; Leytham Makes it Six Wins in a Row, Nine Total for Bombers

By Chuck Corder

Mark Barnhill certainly made up for lost time — burnouts and all.

It had been some time since the veteran short-track from Irvington, Ala., had raced in The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen division at Five Flags Speedway.

While Barnhill raced in last December’s Snowball Derby for the Beef “O” Brady Pro Trucks, his last Sportsmen race at Pensacola’s high banks came at the Sportsmen Snowball Derby in 2014.

That night Barnhill crossed the start-finish line first for an apparent victory. But his celebration was premature as the win was eventually tossed out in technical inspection, handing Brannon Fowler an historic […]

Postponed till Sunday

By Chuck Corder

Mother Nature was the only champion Saturday night at Five Flags Speedway.

With track champions poised to be crowned in both the Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model divisions and the Beef “O” Brady’s Pro Trucks series, scattered showers disrupted to the celebration.

Races for all four divisions, which also includes The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen and Butler U-Pull-It Bombers, continue at noon Sunday at the famed half-mile asphalt oval. Pit gates open at 10 a.m. The PLMs will qualify at noon with races anticipated for 1 p.m. Sunday.

The night’s schedule was first interrupted by a two-hour rain delay just before 30 PLMs were set to […]

Second Ain’t First Loser: Niedecken, Others Look to Secure Snowflake Destiny at Allen Turner Tuneup 100

By Chuck Corder

Racing fans remember well the wise words of gentleman, scholar and big-hairy-American-winning-machine Ricky Bobby who copyrighted the phrase, “If you ain’t first, you’re last™.”

Rarely does a driver gun for second. That is, unless that spot holds vital importance. Such will be the case with the Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Models this Saturday night at Five Flags Speedway.

With Bret Holmes already clinching the track championship last month, one final mystery remains entering the Allen Turner Tuneup 100 on Saturday: Who prevails in a hotly-contested battle for second?

The PLM series winner, the aforementioned Holmes, and the driver that finishes […]

Jorgensen, Langham Stare Down Championship Dreams as Pro Trucks Track Title on Line in Season Finale

By Chuck Corder

Taylor Jorgensen has made quite the splash in her rookie Pro Trucks campaign at Five Flags Speedway.

Yet despite her three wins and a runner-up finish through five races, the 20-year-old Georgian still has had to navigate rough waters thanks to a close rival.

Veteran Howard Langham, 49, has kept her honest by being the model of consistency. The Mobile-area driver hasn’t finished lower than sixth and boasts three podium finishes, including a pair of seconds.

Jorgensen leads Langham by a slim seven points heading into the 40-lap Pro Trucks season finale Saturday at Five Flags.

“It’s a little nerve wracking,” Jorgensen […]
