RODERICK WINS BLIZZARD, VANDERLEY IN TRUCKS, McDONALD IN PURE STOCKS

With Big Names Falling by the Wayside, Roderick Reigns Supreme at Blizzard Series’ Universal Fabricators 125

By Chuck Corder

Casey Roderick never panicked.

The decorated Lawrenceville, Ga., late model driver certainly knows his way around Five Flags Speedway. Boasting a pair of Deep South Crane Blizzard Series track championships and adding the Allen Turner Pro Late Model crown he won last year, Roderick knows Pensacola’s high banks demand tire management.

When Roderick, who started on the pole, yielded the lead to Jesse Dutilly on Lap 3 of the Universal Fabricators 125 — the second Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series race of the season for […]

Wilson & Nasse will let their cars do the talking Friday in the Blizzard 125

After Settling Things with Fists, Words in April, Wilson and Nasse Want Cars to do Talking at Universal Fabricators 125

Stephen Nasse is honest with himself.

“I’m expecting boos,” said the Super Late Model driver from Pinellas Park.

Nasse knows his last visit to Five Flags Speedway probably didn’t win him many fans. Delivering punches while you’re rival is still strapped into his seat tends to leave a bad taste in some folks’ mouths.

The 23-year-old Nasse of the Jett Concrete No. 51 has since admitted that his response and subsequent aggressive antics toward Oklahoma City late model veteran Donnie Wilson were […]

Staying Busy: Despite Demanding Schedule with Stewart-Haas, VanderLey Eyes Return to Five Flags as a Derby Champion

By Chuck Corder

D.J. VanderLey never thought the day would come.

That moment when his father, Dan VanderLey, would be calling him for advice. The proprietor of VDL Fuel Systems, Dan VanderLey has been working underneath the hoods of racecars well before young Daren, known to most as “D.J.,” came around.

But when your son gets a job in the big leagues, the elder VanderLey would be foolish to not use the resources that are just a quick phone call away.

“He’ll call me all the time, asking […]

Kids Steal Show During Annual Bike Races; Crocker, Barnhill Notch Back-to-Back Victories

By Chuck Corder

The night saw a trio of drivers winning for second and third times Friday at Five Flags Speedway.

But the evening belonged to 60 drivers who were looking for win No. 1 at the famed half-mile asphalt oval.

Youth from ages 4 to 12 brought their helmets and bikes to Pensacola’s high banks for the track’s annual kids bicycle races. Four-year-old Colton McClendon, son of “Magic Man” motorcyclist Rob McClendon, won the tykes’ division; Lipscomb Elementary student Sergio Hernandez captured the 6-9 class; and Landen Smith was victorious in […]

CRAWFORD IN MODS OF MAYHEM. BURKETT CLAIMS PURE STOCK BOUNTY, LANGHAM IN SPORTSMEN, WINSLOW WINS OUTLAW STOCKS.

Crawford Earns Emotional Win; 17-Year-Old Burkett Nabs First Career Victory, Collects Balkum Bounty

By Chuck Corder

Adam Crawford put his trust in his equipment and had faith in his genes.

Letting Donnie Hamrac reach clean air at Five Flags Speedway is, usually, never a good idea. Especially, when the three-time Modifieds Snowball Derby champion takes the lead with less than 20 laps remaining.

Typically, you can write a Hamrac “W” in ink. Not this Friday night at the famed half-mile asphalt oval.

The crafty Crawford reset, cooled his No. 64’s tires and made a triumphant charge to reclaim the lead on Lap 43. The Mobile […]

Fresh Start, Fresh Results: With Podium Finishes, Knowles Enjoying Mayhem of Modifieds Racing

By Chuck Corder
Zach Knowles couldn’t have asked for a better introduction on the Modifieds of Mayhem tour.
The 28-year-old Texan is in his first season running the series’ full schedule of races, making stops at some of the south’s most iconic speedways.
Knowles, who has raced both Modifieds and Late Models at Five Flags Speedway, began his year with a third-place finish at the venerable Montgomery (AL) Motor Speedway in early March. But it was last month’s dominant win at Crisp Motorsports Park in Cordele, Ga., that injected some confidence […]

Pollard Wins Another Blizzard Series Race; Wilson, Nasse Batter Each Other In and Out of Cars

Pollard Wins Another Blizzard Series Race; Wilson, Nasse Batter Each Other In and Out of Cars

By Chuck Corder

Bubba Pollard’s smartest decision Friday night came when he was behind.

Instead of coming to the pits to repair significant cosmetic damage to his No. 26 Super Late Model, Pollard opted to stay out on the track and not surrender his spot among the leaders.

It proved a wise choice, as short-track’s “Redneck Jesus” won the Rubber & Specialties 125 at Five Flags Speedway.

“Honestly, I didn’t know it was that bad,” Pollard said, as he inspected the crunched-up right panel in Victory Lane. “I could […]

Good field of Super Late Model drivers to compete Friday for 125 laps.

Fresh Off a Win, Defending Blizzard Series Champion Pollard Returns to 5 Flags for Season-Opening Rubber & Specialties 125

By Chuck Corder

Five Flags Speedway officially kicked off its short-track racing season on March 4.

But the road to the 51st running of the Snowball Derby begins this week at Pensacola’s high banks.

The Super Late Models of the Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series open their year Friday night as the Southern Super Series makes its first stop of the year at the famed half-mile asphalt oval.

Defending and three-time track champion Bubba Pollard — the only Blizzard Series driver to accomplish the hat trick […]

Baklum’s winning streak prompts a bounty.

Balkum Hopes Blistering Start Continues All Season, Leads to Elusive Pure Stocks Track Championship

By Chuck Corder

For nearly a decade now, Robert Balkum has been one of the top drivers in the Lloyd’s Glass Pure Stocks division at Five Flags Speedway.

He has experienced the highest of highs with multiple trips to Victory Lane after feature wins. But Balkum has also swallowed bitter pills of losing out on track championships by the smallest of margins.

The Pensacola driver has made it his mission, in 2018, to erase those painful past nightmares. Through the first month of the season, he is already well on […]
