Roderick and Pollard Prepare to Hoist Night of Champions’ Hardware, Keep Close Eye on Derby Preparations

By Chuck Corder
Picture it: Gridlock in Atlanta.
Bumper-to-bumper traffic, “Spaghetti Junction,” the whole nine. Got that frustrating, irritable mental image emblazoned in your brain?
Now, imagine navigating the notoriously congested I-85 and I-285 beltway with an extraordinarily heavy foot of Casey Roderick, one of the nation’s top late model drivers.
“What gets old is all the traffic,” said Roderick, whose 15 wins this season include all three Allen Turner Pro Late Model 100 lappers run this season at Five Flags Speedway.
“I sit in traffic more than actual driving time. No traffic, I can make it in 45 minutes.”
Instead, it’s typically a 90-minute daily […]

The 30-lap Sportsman feature Saturday will be a victory ride to Victory Lane for Fowler and will be one of four local classes to crown Five Flags Speedway track champions.

Roderick Stays Perfect in Allen Turner PLM Races at 5 Flags This Season, Collects 14th Overall Victory

By Chuck Corder
Casey Roderick and Ronnie Sanders have a number in mind for how many late model victories they want to finish the season with.

Twenty might seem unrealistic and a tall order for most drivers. But, Roderick is unlike most drivers.

The recently turned 25 year old from Lawrenceville, Ga., took another step Friday night at Five Flags Speedway toward reaching the goal he and Sanders, the No. 18’s car owner, set for themselves.

Roderick got his 14th late model win of the season, holding off defending Snowflake 100 champion Augie Grill in one of the best battles of the season and […]

Allen Turner PLM Series: Even if Driving is Not in Picture, Currey Determined to Have Future in Racing

By Chuck Corder
Bayley Currey knows dreams can only take you so far.
Sometimes, taking destiny into your own hands is the only option to achieving aspirations.
Wise beyond his 20 years of age, the short-track Texan driver has realistic expectations that his goals of climbing through the NASCAR ranks might come behind the wall instead of behind the wheel.
That’s why Currey, a junior at Texas State in San Marcos, chose to major in mechanical engineering — a field that has proven instrumental in understanding the nuances of racecars.
“A lotta stuff you learn with these classes I’m taking, it really opens your eyes […]

By Chuck Corder
Bubba Winslow didn’t look far to find love.
The Faith Chapel Outlaw Stocks driver from Cantonment met his future wife, Ashley, at Five Flags Speedway and immediately bonded over their shared love of racing.
With the lovebirds married 10 years now, Bubba Winslow doesn’t look far to get a fresh dose of reality.
“She’s probably one of, if not my biggest supporters I got,” the 27 year old said. “She’s also my worst critic. She likes to put me back where I need be.”
Winslow welcomes all feedback from his spouse, who is right by her man’s side every Friday night at […]

Packed House For Crashers and Winners

The regular drivers in the Modifieds of Mayhem series were no match for Augie Grill on Friday night at Five Flags Speedway.

Grill, a two-time Snowball Derby champion, made his first appearance in the series this year and led the final 34 of 50 laps for an easy victory.

It came before a packed house at the track, many of whom where there to see the Demolition Derby, which was won by Kurtis Bailey after 10 minutes of mayhem between 11 cars.

But the fans got to see a dominating performance from Grill in his familiar 112 car.

“That’s the best Modified I’ve sat […]

Barnhill’s Passion for Engines Steers Passion for Sportsmen Racing, Victories at Five Flags Speedway

By Chuck Corder
Mark Barnhill has been working on cars since before he had his driver’s license.
“There wouldn’t be a weekend that would go by that me and my brother weren’t pulling a motor outta one car and putting it in another,” the 47-year-old Alabama driver said.
These days, Barnhill is still tinkering with engines. He does it for a day job, as a mechanic for United Rentals in the Mobile-area. And, he continues messing with motors in his spare time, as one of the perennial contenders in The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen class at Five Flags Speedway.
Barnhill already has two […]

Babb Looks to Show Demolition Derby Prowess, Repeat as Champion of Five Flags’ Annual Smash Fest

By Chuck Corder
On the surface, there wouldn’t seem to be too much game planning for a Demolition Derby.
See car, demolish car just about covers the strategy sessions.
But even in a Demolition Derby, luck sometimes has to fall your way. It did last year for local mechanic Justin Babb when he won the annual crash fest at Five Flags Speedway.
“Honest to God, it was a fluke last year,” said Babb, 32, who works primarily for Beach Bum Trolley, his family’s business. “Every time I hit somebody, the car would shut down on me and sit there for almost 10 seconds. Then, […]

League of His Own: Pollard Dominates SSS at Five Flags

Five Flags Speedway (FL) hosted its third Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco event of the 2017 season Friday night.  A talented field of 25 Super Late Model drivers made their way to the Pensacola half-mile oval, but at the end of the night it was one driver in a league of his own.

Bubba Pollard made the 125-lap race look easy as he cruised under the checkered flag, claiming his 15th career Southern Super Series win. Pollard took over the lead just before the race reached the halfway mark and never bothered looking back.

“This is actually a different race car […]
