VanderLey Returns to Snowball Derby to Drive Pro Truck

VanderLey went wheel-to-wheel with Chase Elliott over the last five laps in one of the Snowball Derby’s most iconic moments. VanderLey led Elliott by inches every lap, until the final circuit. A slip in turn three on the last lap allowed Elliott to get to the flag first.

VanderLey, who had won a handful of Pro Late Model races before that night, settled for second. He admittedly thinks about that night often.

“I think about that race nearly every day,” VanderLey said with a chuckle. “It was the highest of highs and a highlight of my driving career, but it also sucks […]

50 for 50: Grill Went Back-to-Back, Still Wants More

For decades Augie Grill had seen the checkered flag from nearly every possible location…except one.

Grill stood in the bed of his dad’s truck as a child. He sat on top of the pit box and called Wayne Anderson to the win in 2001. He even spotted a few races.

Decades after his first trip to the Gulf Coast, Grill captured his first Snowball Derby win as a driver in 2007. He followed his initial triumph with another win in 2008, albeit following the disqualification of the initial winner.

Grill’s two Tom Dawson trophies are some of his most-cherished racing memories, and he […]

Three Legends Headed to Snowball Derby Last Chance Race

Three of the nation’s most accomplished veteran wheelmen will have to race their way in to the 50th Annual Snowball Derby.

Five-time Snowball Derby winner Rich Bickle, former NASCAR Wheelen All-American national champion David Rogers and Northwest racing legend Garrett Evans were all not quick enough to make the field in Friday’s qualifying session and will start Saturday’s Last Chance Race.

Bickle who has searched for speed all week long, said his car came to life somewhat during the morning practice sessions. However, he admitted not being at Five Flags for more than a decade played a role in his sub-par effort.

“This […]

Peltier Wins Pole, Nasse Survives Dramatic Derby Qualifying Night

Friday at the Snowball Derby is called the most intense day of qualifying in short track racing, and it lived up to its billing this season at Five Flags Speedway (FL).

Going down to the last car, Stephen Nasse sat on the bubble with defending race champion Christian Eckes taking the track. Nasse had every reason to believe he would be forced to settle for his Southern Super Series provisional starting spot.

Instead, Eckes ran a 16.660-second lap time, matching the lap posted by Nasse and Donnie Wilson earlier in the session. By virtue of being the first of the three drivers […]

Snowball Derby Odds: Who Will Claim the Tom Dawson Trophy?

You’re not going to see these odds at any casinos in Vegas or even in the Deep South closer to Pensacola. Handicapping the favorites for the Snowball Derby can be such a tall task to deliberate, especially for the 50th running.

Nevertheless, and although we do not necessarily condone gambling, the Speed51.com powered by JEGS staff decided to carry through with a friendly distribution of odds for Sunday’s 300-lap prestigious Super Late Model race at Five Flags Speedway.

We ranked the drivers straight up, not based on how they have performed in practice leading into Friday evening’s qualifying. Previous performances in the […]

50 for 50: Nobody Better at Finishing the Derby Than Ridley

Let the debate begin. Sure, Rich Bickle won five Snowball Derby races, but Jody Ridley has him beat in two other categories. As a result, some people consider Ridley the best driver to ever run the Snowball Derby.

To put it simple, Ridley was the Dick Trickle of the south.   While chasing down All Pro titles and NASCAR Southeast titles, Ridley found himself on the Florida Panhandle often.

The Chatsworth, Georgia driver had a love affair with Pensacola. He could run well and finish races there, but winning was hard and the Snowball Derby was one that stuck out to him as a […]

Sauter Crashes Hard in First Snowball Derby Practice

Wisconsin’s Johnny Sauter came into the 50th Annual Snowball Derby weekend as one of the favorites, even though it’s his first attempt in the prestigious event. Unfortunately, before Thursday practice reached lunch break, his team was forced to pack things up following multiple on-track issues that culminated with a hard crash in turn four.

Only 15 minutes into the session, the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion had an oil line come loose, setting off a trail of smoke and fluid with even a fire briefly igniting under the hood as his Super Late Model limped to the pits. The […]
