Sep 02, 2009 - Sportsmen Special
The Sportsmen, a group of competitors where it’s rare to see a teenage driver. These drivers work their day jobs, and spend their nights in the garage with a friend or 2 on their cars. They compete every night we race.
The king has been Randy Thompson, who also maintains a Super Stocker. The rest of the field is constantly looking to get past steady Randy. He has won more races this year (7), then the rest of the drivers combined.
Veteran Billy Hoover loves to wheel around the asphalt…he has been doing it for over a dozen years. Billy received 3 wins this season, and he gives his trophy to a youngster in the stands after each win. Other winners have been Shanna Ard, and Stevie Mercer.
Steve Buttrick, where did he come from? A new driver with a passion to get better each week, and he has. Veterans Jim Pokrant and Willie Kitchen keep up the pressure on themselves to improve, and on other drivers to catch them.
Simply, the Sportsmen enjoy the sport, with speed that is affordable, competition that is tight, and experience is critical. The more experience, the fewer repairs the next week..
Their next race is like running two races, it’s double points. Thanks to Chris Cotto at West Florida Coatings for sponsoring the Sportsmen.
