Nov 23, 2009 - 2009 DERBY OPEN TEST IN THE BOOKS
Not even a 100% rain forecast could stop the thunder of engines Saturday at 5 Flags Speedway, as Snowball Derby practice produced large car counts and near record lap times. Under threatening skies all day, Mother Nature smiled on the racers, and held off the rain until very late in the day, much to the delight of many drivers whom had traveled a long way in search of additional Snowball Derby speed. Oklahoma veteran Donnie Wilson, was one such driver. Wilson’s Ford was in top form as he toured the half mile right on, or near, Grant Enfinger’s track record of 16.62 seconds. Recent Alabama 200 winner Chris Davidson was on hand, as well as Georgia driver Max Gresham, fresh off a fine showing in the World Crown 300. 2009 5 Flags Champions Johanna Long, Ronnie Smith and Randy Thompson were among the many local drivers taking to the track both Saturday and again on Sunday. Private testing will continue for the next week, except on Thursday, when the track will be closed for Thanksgiving.
