Five Flags Speedway
Butler and Bomber Has a Nice Ring to it
Cheryl Butler Nelson’s fondest childhood memories revolved around racing.
The co-owner and proprietor with husband Kevin of Butler U-Pull-It, once again the sponsor for the Bombers division at Five Flags Speedway, fondly recalls late nights at Flomaton (Ala.) Speedway sitting in the wrecker her father Jack Butler owned.
“We’d sit in the infield, and when a wreck happened, he’d let me flip lights, and I’d get to tell dad when it was time to go, Nelson said. “The smell of the exhaust and the roar of the raw horsepower, it gets my blood flowing. My love and my business go hand in hand.
That’s why Nelson and Five Flags make a perfect fit.
Butler U-Pull-It, a self-service salvage yard at 2730 Hollywood Ave. in Pensacola, is in its third year attaching its name to the Bombers series.
“That’s the type of car I sell parts for, Nelson explained.
Butler U-Pull-It’s involvement at Five Flags began when they first sponsored the Bombers cars of Kenny Bullard and Tina Davidson.
“It began coming to watch my cars, Nelson said. “Then I thought that Butler and Bomber had a nice ring about it. It’s letting the customer know; being known before being needed.
Her business, which will celebrate its 12th anniversary in May, looks forward to continue to be a presence at Five Flags. At last Friday’s race, Nelson — with assistance from Davidson and Bullard — handed out Easter baskets to the kids in the grandstands.
At the 43rd annual Snowball Derby last December, Nelson brought out the monster truck her husband and family friend Jerry Simmons built. The truck was included in the Parade of Aid, the group of emergency vehicles that patrols Five Flags, before the Bombers Derby race.
“All praise goes to the Bryant family. Those are some wonderful people that run the track, Nelson said. “We loved being a part of the Snowball Derby and what they allow us to do. I hope to have many more years of relationship with them.
