Five Flags Speedway

Tons of Glitz, Little Glamour as Celebs Ready to Battle it Out

By Chuck Corder

Well, this ought to be fun.

Challenged on air the day she formally was hired at 102.7 FM, Lindsey Marie was ready to join her morning show co-host Marty White on the racetrack.

Ahem, in White’s West Florida Coatings Sportsman car.

“I didn’t realize racecars didn’t have passenger seats, said Lindsey Marie, a 2007 graduate of the University of West Florida.

Instead, she’ll be behind the wheel as one of seven drivers for the annual Celebrities Race on Friday at Five Flags Speedway where they hope to raise money and awareness for United Cerebral Palsy Northwest Florida.

“It went from a joke to, ‘Yeah, let’s do it!’ Lindsey Marie said. “I guess it’s pretty gutsy, but I think it’ll turn out good. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Fingers, heck, she needs to worry about her feet.

Lindsey Marie has some giant shoes to fill. White won this same race four times before becoming a West Florida Coatings Sportsman regular three years ago.

“I told her to stay off the wall and don’t catch on fire, White said.

Sound advice, but perhaps not accurate.

“Marty told me, ‘Drive like hell and turn left,’ Lindsey Marie said.

That’s what she hopes to do against her competition. Joining Lindsey Marie will be Sheriffs David Morgan (Escambia County) and Wendell Hall (Santa Rosa County), Escambia County Commissioners Wilson Robertson and Gene Valentino, Cat Country’s new morning voice Reese Andrews, Kevin Peterson from Soft Rock 94 and WCOA’s Jim Sanborn.

The Celebs Race kicks off Friday night’s festivities.

Speaking of White. He and his West Florida Coatings Sportsman Special rivals will battle in a he 35-lap showdown that will pay out $1,000 to the winner. The Super Stocks and Bombers keep their seasons rolling.

And the night will be capped off by the first Demolition Derby in a couple decades with a winner-take-all $1,500.

The grandstands open at 5 p.m. Friday with admission as follows: $15 Adults; $14 Seniors/Military; $12 Students; $5 Child (6-11); Under 6 is Free. The pits open at 3 p.m. with passes costing $25.

“When I get in there, I think I’ll be focused on getting a good start, Lindsey Marie said. “I love speed, so I’ll run as fast as I can. I just wanna get out there and have a good time and see how it shakes out.

Hopefully, it’ll go better than the fitting went earlier this week.

The 5-foot-1 Lindsey Marie first had cushions stuffed behind her. Then, when the seat was moved up, she couldn’t see over the steering wheel.

“I have really short legs, Lindsey Marie said, “and I was wearing tight blue jeans. That wasn’t a good idea when I was getting in and out of (the car?).

No blue jeans. No passenger seats.

Hey, at least she’s learning something as her racing education has been fast tracked this week.
