Five Flags Speedway

THEY SMASHED AND CRASHED

Wow! The revival of the Demolition Derby at 5 Flags was a huge crowd pleaser. Seven drivers strapped in and put it in reverse, and rammed into anything that moved. It was a classy event...one driver was wheeling a Mercedes Benz.

When the smoke cleared, the heap prepared by David Tau at Winged Wheeled Garage and driven by Ronnie Smith emerged the winner of the $1,500 check. Len Frank and Smith locked up, and when the final gasp from Frank's clunker was heard, Smith was declared the winner. Frank's steering wheel caught fire after the air bag propellant cartridge exploded.

It was a first experience for most of the drivers, and fans too. The last Demolition Derby at 5 Flags was when Ronald Regan was president. One thing the crowd was unanimous on, another Demo Derby. Start scouting for a big old car for next summer.
