Five Flags Speedway
Maintenance Includes Excavating Big Cracks
5 Flags Speedway is undergoing some off season surface safety improvements. Areas of alligator cracking are being removed by a national contractor to minimize deterioration of the existing asphalt surface. Richard Goss of Louisville, KY is overseeing the maintenance operations. His company was here 3 years ago to grind off the top wearing surface, that resulted in faster times for competitors.
This procedure is expected to last 6 weeks, and be completed by late February in time for the season opener on March 22nd, and a pre-season open practice on a date to be announced. The track was last resurfaced in 1973, and the seasoned surface is preferred by many drivers, saying it contributes to the character of the competition.
It should be a safer, smoother, seasoned surface when completed. The contractor will work around the scheduled appearances of the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience, scheduled for 3 days in February.
