New Events, Format Add Excitement to 2015 Southern Super Series
PENSACOLA, FLÂ - With new events, a new track and a new race format, the 2015 schedule for the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco is chock full of excitement for racers and fans alike.
The third season of the Southern Super Series will feature a 12-race confirmed schedule with two additional events to be announced soon. Regular events will now follow a 100-lap, four-tire format to help drivers and teams with expenses, while the shorter race (formerly 125 laps) will add to excitement for the fans.
The Super Late Model touring series will kick off its season at the 38th Annual Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway (Opp, AL) on March 14 and 15. The series will also have its inaugural visit to Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Georgia on June 6.
In addition to those events the Southern Super Series will also return to its cornerstone tracks of Five Flags Speedway in Florida and Alabama’s Mobile International Speedway and Montgomery Motor Speedway.
“We’ve got some great new events, stops at our trademark facilities and a new format that will make the racers and the fans excited, so we can’t wait to kick off the third Southern Super Series season in just a few months, said Southern Super Series director Tim Bryant. “Currently we have four extra-distance races which makes up approximately a quarter of our schedule. Every other race is going to be a 100-lap, four-tire race. What we want to provide is a racing format that is good for our racers and also provides quality excitement for our fans.
To accompany the new 100-lap distance for the series non-extra-distance events, the Southern Super Series will enact an invert of eight, 10 or 12 after qualifying to ensure a battle for the checkered flag in each of the series’ 100-lap races.
“We heard the voice of the racers asking for four-tire races, added Bryant. “In an effort to accommodate that, we shortened the distance of our regular-distance races to 100 laps. The racing will be all-out at that distance. By going to an inverted start of eight, 10 or 12, we’re ensured to have some passing, which is what our fans are screaming for.
Cordele, Georgia’s Watermelon Capital Speedway will host its first Southern Super Series event on Saturday, June 6. Already the home of SpeedFest for the Champion Racing Association, one of the premier early-season Super Late Model events in the country, Watermelon Capital has extended its footprint as a deep south racing hub by adding the SSS to its 2015 racing schedule.
“With the help of CRA, SpeedFest has become a great event that helps kick off the season in the Southeast, said Bryant. “We’re appreciative that new track owner Wayne Lyle has shown an interest in the Southern Super Series and we’re excited to be there in June.
The 2015 Southern Super Series season will conclude with three extra-distance races, including the Lee Fields Memorial 150 in Mobile, AL on August 22, the Alabama 200 at Montgomery, AL on September 12 and the 150-lap championship event at the home of the Snowball Derby, Five Flags Speedway on September 26.
“We want to end the season with a bang, added Bryant.   “We’re excited to end the season with two stand-alone events at Mobile and Five Flags, sandwiching one of the most prestigious short track races in the country, the Alabama 200. For the first time, the Lee Fields Memorial at Mobile will be a Super Late Model event, which we’re excited about. Stan Narrison has done a great job bringing the Alabama 200 at Montgomery back to what it was known for for so many years. Then we’ll have our season championship race at Five Flags, It will be a 150 lap event and that will be a great prelude to what will be coming up two months later in the 48th Annual Snowball Derby.
Southern Super Series officials will have additional details on the two “TBA dates currently listed on the 2015 SSS schedule soon.
