November 25, 2015 • App, Archives, Late Models, Snowball Derby, Top Stories

sportsman-snowball-derby-2014-racing-action-537x350Much of the talk leading up to the Snowball Derby revolves around the Super Late Models that will be competing in the 300-lap race at Five Flags Speedway (FL) on Sunday, December 6.   But the Snowball Derby is much bigger than just one race.  It’s a whole week’s worth of racing with seven different divisions duking it out for bragging rights.

Of course, the Super Late Models will be the main focus throughout the weekend with future stars of the sport like Chase Elliott and John Hunter Nemechek joining the most talented group of short track racing stars you’ll find anywhere.  It’s a race that nobody wants to miss and rightfully so, the Snowball Derby itself has earned the reputation of being the most prestigious short track race in the country.

In addition to the Super Late Models, there’s a lot of other great racing that will take place throughout the weekend including the Allen Turner Snowflake 100 for the Pro Late Models on Saturday night, December 5.  In that race, you’ll see many of the stars that will also be competing in the Snowball Derby the next day.

Past Snowflake 100 race winners include Bubba Pollard, Chase Elliott, Augie Grill and the inaugural race winner Gary St. Amant.

Before the Late Model drivers strap in for their main events on Saturday and Sunday, the grassroots racers in four different divisions will have their shot at earning a win during the biggest week of the year.

Feature racing kicks off Thursday night after a full day of practice for the Late Models.  The Butler U-Pull-It Bombers will go 30 laps before the competitive Beef O’Brady’s Sportsman division takes to the track for 50 laps of intense racing action.

Friday will be the most intense day of all with Late Models preparing for NASH 102.7 FM Pole Night.  Once qualifying is done, it will be time for more racing as the Faith Chapel Street Stocks and the Modifieds each compete in 50 lap features.

Things continue to heat up Saturday with 50-lap Last Chance Qualifiers for both the Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby.  Once the fields are set, it will be time for the biggest Pro Late Model race in the country when the Late Model stars strap in for the Snowflake 100.  The Better Built Pro Truck division will race for 50 laps around the Pensacola, Florida oval at the conclusion of “The Flake.

Sunday needs no introduction.  At 2 p.m. CT, the most diverse and talented group of Super Late Model drivers in the country will strap in for 300 laps and all eyes in the racing world will be on Five Flags Speedway.

In all, not counting qualifying races, there will be 630 laps of racing at Five Flags Speedway over the course of four days.  When people say the Snowball Derby is more than just a single race, they mean it.
