Speed51 Looks at Kyle Busch in the Blizzard 150 this Saturday

Story by Speed51.com

Prior to heading to Fort Worth, TX to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch will climb back behind the wheel of a Super Late Model for Saturday night’s Blizzard Series finale at Five Flags Speedway.  He will once again join Kyle Busch Motorsports driver Sammy Smith as a two-car attack going into Pensacola.

This will be Busch’s fourth Super Late Model race in 2020, which has seen mixed results.  He went back to where his career started and picked up a win at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in February and beat out the West Coast’s best to take the win there, while finishing sixth in the Gandrud Auto Group 250 at Wisconsin International Raceway and eighth in the Clyde Hart Memorial.

After seeing gains in speed in their Super Late Model program with Smith behind the wheel in the last two months, Busch is excited to get back in a Late Model at a track he has scored two Snowball Derby wins at.

“I was able to run a couple of Super Late Model races over the summer and our stuff was a little bit off. Seth (Holbrook) and everyone on the Super Late Model team have been working hard the last couple of months doing some testing around their race schedule and seem to have made some gains, Busch told Speed51. “Sammy (Smith) was running top three at both Bristol and Winchester but unfortunately had some things happen and didn’t finish where they ran but still were able to finish just outside the top five at both those events.

While Busch has made seven starts at Five Flags Speedway since 2002, this will be his first Blizzard Series appearance, as well as his first-career Southern Super Series start.  While he enjoys it anytime he gets into a Super Late Model, this race comes with an extra task.  As he continues to be pleased by the progress KBM has made in recent months, he wants to be able to provide more feedback as it gets into the heart of “Big Race Season.â€?

“Racing at Five Flags next week in the Blizzard race will be a good opportunity for me to evaluate where our stuff is now compared to where it was a few months ago and for me to see if there is any feedback I can provide to keep things moving in the right direction,â€? Busch said.  â€œSome of the guys who will be contenders for the Derby like (Stephen) Nasse and Bubba(Pollard) will be running this race, so it’s a good opportunity to see where we stack up against them and where we need to keep making improvements.â€?

Kyle Busch Motorsports has been perhaps the most successful team at the Snowball Derby for the past decade-plus.  The team has won the prestigious race four times since 2009 with himself, Erik Jones and Noah Gragson, and other drivers such as Christopher Bell, Brian Ickler and Raphael Lessard put up strong showings in KBM Super Late Models at the event.

The 53rd Annual Snowball Derby will have Sammy Smith behind the wheel of the No. 51.  Busch would love nothing more than to see the Iowa teenager pick up the Tom Dawson Trophy in his car come the first weekend of December, and he will do what he has to do to push Smith in the right direction.

“The Derby is the biggest race of the year and we take pride in our guys running well in that race and competing for the win. It’s going to be Sammy’s first Derby, so we want to do everything we can to help make it a successful one.

Fans who are unable to make it to Five Flags Speedway for the Blizzard/Allen Turner PLM Series finales can watch both races live on Speed51.TV.  Click here to purchase your PPV ticket today.
