Sunny February skies made for a beautiful backdrop for the 7th Annual Sweat Hogg Grand Prix Saturday at 5 Flags Speedway, with 33 cars taking the 2pm Green Flag.
Three time Winner Ricky Johnson, from VanCleave, MS., took the early lead after drawing the Pole position earlier in the day. For 33 laps Johnson put on a road racing clinic, at one time holding nearly a two lap lead, only to have an overheating engine send him to the pits for repairs.
Action was intense at this point with Georgia visitor Dave Sherman, Panama City’s Frank Keller, and Pensacola’s own Tony Boyd each sharing the point on the field.
But it was Navarre signmaker Daryl Lynchard who was making his presence known. Lynchard’s car was incredibly consistent, and he took the lead on lap 61, and maintained that position until the 3:30pm Checkered Flag call. Sean McGuirk also maintained a steady pace throughout the day and came home second.
Johnson rode the speed of his Accura to make up several lost laps and came home a strong third, followed by Brian Lane, and Sherman. Dylan Oestricher, Tommy Lowery, Eddie Queysen, Brandin Sidner, and Jacob Munro rounded out the top 10.
