Griffin Makes it Happen in Outlaws; Robinson Prevails in Epic Sportsmen Spectacular Against Patrick

Two wheels outnumbered four at Five Flags Speedway.
It happens every June when the track hosts its annual Kids Bike Races for three different age groups. This year, more than 50 cyclists descended upon the famed half-mile asphalt oval in search of some fame alongside their Friday night heroes.
Every child that competed received a trophy and a frozen treat, but three champions were crowned. Pensacola’s Hadley Murphy won the 5-and-under division; Spencer Burks, of Milton and son to Pro Trucks driver Brandon Burks, captured the 6-to-9 division; and Preston Pratt, of Daphne, Ala., brought home the title for the 10-to-12 division.
Joining those first-time winners was Derrick Griffin in the Faith Chapel Outlaws series. Griffin got his first official victory of the season with a dominant performance in the 50-lap feature.
The Pensacola driver took the lead from Bubba Winslow on Lap 12 and cruised to Victory Lane.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to drive this thing,” Griffin said.
Logan Boyett, who has three Outlaws wins in 2024, finished second and Carter Taylor came home third. Griffin was fastest in qualifying (17.596 seconds) and started second after the die-roll invert. He was fantastic on two restarts, allowing Griffin to open up his cushion down the stretch.
“From where we were last race, we’ve made some gains on it,” Boyett said. “We could see the back of Derrick’s car this time. We were a little too tight. Every gain we’d have a slip and it made it harder to catch him.”
The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen
The much-hyped and much-anticipated matchup between Chad Robinson and James Patrick finally played out at Five Flags Speedway on Friday.
The two Mobile-area drivers were supposed to go head-to-head at Mobile International Speedway last week with Patrick looking to collect a bounty on his friendly rival, but only if Robinson finished the race. Things went awry when Robinson had tire issues and bowed out early.
The pair quickly found each other once again Friday during The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen Spectacular at Pensacola’s high banks and delivered a masterful performance that fans expect and appreciate about the two drivers.
Robinson prevailed this night, taking the lead from Patrick with five rotations left in the 30-lap feature and never letting Patrick answer back. It marks Robinson’s second straight Sportsmen Spectacular victory.
“The tires weren’t the greatest, but we tried to save as long as we could,” Robinson said. “About halfway I picked it up a little bit.
“All year, I wanted to come back for this race because I won it last year and I wanted it again.”
Robinson earned $1,000 for the win, doubling the amount a typical Sportsmen feature pays to the victor. Patrick was second and Charles Davis rounded out the podium.
Outside of the pass for the lead, Robinson’s best move all night may have come when the green flag dropped on the opening lap. Instead of going toe-to-toe with Patrick and chewing up precious rubber on the high side, Robinson quickly fell in line and set his sights on figuring out how to get around Patrick’s No. 11.
“That car is fast,” Patrick said of Robinson’s No. 32. “I can’t take anything away from him. I don’t wanna run second to anybody else other than him.”
Lloyd’s Glass Pure Stocks
The championship chase for the Lloyd’s Glass Pure Stocks is hotter than summer’s already scorching temperatures.
Maddox Langham and Mason Johnston entered the 20-lap feature Friday at Five Flags Speedway in a dead heat for the top spot in the standings. By the end of the night, Langham was back out in front thanks to his third 20-lap feature win of the season. He now leads Johnston, who finished third, by four points.
“We got this thing dialed in,” Langham said. “It’s getting faster and faster every race. I love running this car. It’s fun to do. It’s a blast every time.”
Colby McDonald, in his first appearance of the season, finished runner-up between Langham and Johnston.
“I finally got a Friday night off from work,” an excited McDonald shared. “The car was bad loose. We’ve gotta do our homework. Our main purpose in coming is to get ready for the (Snowball) Derby.”
While every driver has the Derby tumbling around somewhere in their mind, Langham and Johnston are locked in a battle that promises to not be settled until Night of Champions in September.
That’s why Langham’s restart with five to go was not just the difference in Friday’s race, but that moment could go a long way in deciding the fate of the series this season.
“I used more than they did,” said Johnston, who started sixth, of Langham and McDonald. “At the end of the day, they had better cars and they beat me. We’ll get ready and try it again next time.”
Story & Bleich Roofing Crown Stocks
Andalusia, Alabama, is a 90-minute drive from the gates of Five Flags Speedway.
Almost every Friday the famed half-mile asphalt oval is racing, the Salter Brothers are making the trek through the Conecuh National Forest and to the Panhandle.
Their journey south is starting to pay off in the Story and Bleich Roofing Crown Stocks division.
Chris Salter scored his first career victory at Five Flags on Friday night by handily winning the 20-lap feature. Salter became the fifth different winner this season for the entry-level class that has taken the local racing scene by storm.
“I love this place,” Salter said. “This is fun. It was a good race and I appreciate all the guys racing me clean.”
There were 17 total cars in the field, but Salter never had to pass one after inheriting the lead on the second lap. Pole sitter Doug Thorpe Jr. went for a spin after leading the first lap and was forced to restart at the tail end.
Salter pounced on the opportunity and maintained a healthy distance against eventual runner-up Braeden Kitchen. Thorpe rallied from the back of the pack to finish third.
“We’ll take it after the two weeks we’ve had,” Kitchen said. “I replace the whole front side of car. I ain’t gonna change another one.”
